バイデン大統領、就任演説のなかのAmerican Anthemとは？
なんとか無事終わったアメリカ大統領就任式。
バイデン大統領の演説にはジョージ・ワシントンの名も登場。
あちこちにリンカーンのゲティスバーグ演説のフレーズも見られました。
たとえばリンカーンがゲティスバーグの戦地をあらためて墓地として呼ぶときthis hallowed groundと呼んだのを連邦議事堂前の描写に使っています。
testもバイデンさん何度も使っています。リンカーンもtesting whether that nation or any nation so conceived can long endure…と。
the last full measure of devotion などこれを聴いてリンカーンを思い出さないとしたらわかったつもりでわかってない、でしょう。
さて、いろんな人物や地名が盛り込まれたスピーチのなかにAmerican Anthemというひとことがありました。
これは「星条旗よ永遠なれ」ではありません。割と新しい歌で、初演はスミソニアン協会の式典で、クリントン大統領夫妻を前にDenyce Gravesというメゾソプラノの歌手がい歌ったときだそうです。
いったんは訛って訳した方が歌いやすいべな、と思ったのですが、その格調高さに、あわてて讃美歌日本語をかきあつめてみました。
